Retin A

Retin A comes in several different strengths. Your dermatologist should start you on a mild version. Your skin may need to build up a tolerance to the weaker strengths and then work its way up to the stronger formulations. This acne treatment works to force follicles to empty their oil accumulations and excess cells, which are the root of the acne problem. Without these materials in the follicles, the blemishes have a hard time developing. It also can smooth fine lines for those who have a few first wrinkles.

You will probably find that your acne condition worsens during the early stages of this acne treatment. (If you use this medication for wrinkles, this does not necessarily apply). This medication is not causing new problems, but is bringing to the surface earlier pimples that would have appeared later. The skin may also take on a red glow and may peel. It is extremely important to wear sunscreen and to avoid sun exposure because the skin is too sensitive during this acne treatment.

The face should be cleansed twice a day with an extremely gentle soap or cleanser. You can ask your dermatologist to recommend one. This medication should be applied in the evening, at least 30 minutes after cleansing. It is ideal to wear a moisturizer containing a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 during the day. Ask your dermatologist to recommend one.
